Over the years, behavioral scientists have noticed that some people have an intense desire to achieve something, while others may not seem that concerned about their achievements. This phenomenon has attracted a lot of discussions and debates. Scientists have observed that people with a high level of achievement motivation exhibit certain characteristics. Achievement motivation is the tendency to endeavor for success and to choose goal oriented success or failure activities.

Achievement motivation forms to be the basic for a good life. People who are oriented towards achievement, in general, enjoy life and feel in control. Being motivated keeps people dynamic and gives them self-respect. They set moderately difficult but easily achievable targets, which help them, achieve their objectives. They do not set up extremely difficult or extremely easy targets. By doing this they ensure that they only undertake tasks that can be achieved by them. Achievement motivated people prefer to work on a problem rather than leaving the outcome to chance. It is also seen that achievement motivated people seem to be more concerned with their personal achievement rather than the rewards of success.

It is generally seen that achievement motivated people evidenced a significantly higher rate of advancement in their company compared to others. Programs and courses designed, involves seven “training inputs.” The first step refers to the process through which achievement motivation thinking is taught to the person. The second step helps participants understand their own individuality and goals. The third assist participants in practicing achievement-related actions in cases, role-plays, and real life. A fourth refers to practicing of achievement-related actions in business and other games. A fifth input encourages participants to relate the achievement behavior model to their own behavior, self-image, and goals. The sixth program facilitates participants to develop a personal plan of action. Finally, the course provides participants with feedback on their progress towards achieving objectives and targets.

Achievement motivation as a branch of study has greatly established its prominence. A number of companies are now training their employees in the same.

The economy is terrible. Swine flu is everywhere. It is hurricane season. So what is there to be positive about? This is a difficult question to answer sometimes. How do you stay positive when the negatives are all around you? Anyone can be positive when things are going right and you are on top of the World, but how about in the dark days?

Being and staying positive has a lot to do with long term attitudes and core beliefs. Most people who can stay positive in tough times have an attitude of optimism: when all is said and done, the World is a decent place and most people are pretty decent. This is optimism. On the other hand, people with a pessimistic attitude can even turn Christmas into a downer. Nothing can make them happy. Positive and optimistic people can stay the course and come through tragedy after tragedy and still look at the world as a relatively good place.

Where does this strength come from? Some have argued, and genetic research tends to back them up, that we are born this way. Recent genetic research has identified “happy” genes indicating that some people are naturally happy and optimistic while others are “Debbie Downers” (i.e. negative people).

Psychologists will argue that a person’s World-view is shaped by their environment and experiences (which form our attitudes). Attitude is the screen or filter through which we interpret the world. For example, consider that a baby is born. One person looks at the event as a blessing from God and is filled with joy while another person greets the child with anger and despair since it’s another mouth to feed. The event was the same; a baby was born. However the event’s value and interpretation depended on the observer’s personal attitude.

So, why bother being positive? One main reason is that things change and eventually something good will happen. You cannot get any enjoyment out of life, good times or bad, if you do not stay positive.

Start Improving Your Life

If you’re looking at improving your life, the improvements can come in many forms. First, one must analyze the areas of his or her life in which improvements can be made.

If you’re an unhappy person then it would be wise to trace back to the roots of your discontent and begin formulating a plan for improving your life from them. For some people, they lack enough interaction with others and wish to be more engaged with their fellow man. For others, they need more isolation. Some folks are looking to lose weight or exercise more to tone their bodies, while others want more sleep, or to fight off an ailment. Others still want a promotion at work, or to reconcile with old/lost friends, or to meet the right person to spend the rest of their life with.

But more than likely, improving your life is some combination of these topics (and others). Look at what you want to improve once you’ve identified it/them, and begin brainstorming and consulting with others about how to go about it. Seek counsel from loved ones, go to a library or online and read up on those topics, or get professional assistance from someone with experience if time and money will allow it.

Whatever you do, make sure you’re fair to yourself and that you don’t compromise on your end goals. Don’t aim to do too much too quickly, either. Set and record milestones to remind yourself of the progress you hope to make, and to provide perspective as you go for how far you’ve come. If your self improvement is weight loss, for example, take a picture of yourself the same day each week and write your weight on that picture, and after a few weeks go through your collection to see how far you’ve come. It’s extra motivation that what you’re doing is working!
